Sustainable Wednesday: Integrating Eco-consciousness into English Language Learning

For institutions teaching English to international students, the language classroom offers a great opportunity to not only reinforce environmentally-friendly values, but expose students to relevant, authentic applications of the English language. This Sustainable Wednesday, we explore ways to naturally integrate sustainability themes into your English lessons.

Integrate topical vocabulary

To infuse sustainability into English language lessons, teach vocabulary terms related to the environment, such as ‘carbon footprint’, 'renewable energy’, ‘deforestation’, and more. Teach these terms in example sentences and have students practise using them in conversation. For reading and listening exercises, select texts that cover topics such as conservation, green technology, and climate change. By learning key environmental vocabulary, students can build their language skills while learning about real-world sustainability issues.

Encourage discussions on environmental news

Stay up-to-date on major news stories and events related to climate change, pollution, natural disasters, new eco-friendly initiatives, and other environmental topics. Use these as thought-provoking discussion starters for speaking practice in the classroom. Students can analyse different perspectives, debate potential solutions, and develop reasoning skills – all while practising their English.

Incorporate project-based learning

Another powerful approach is to structure project-based English lessons around sustainability themes. For example, you could have student groups research and create presentations about the environmental impact of different industries. Or have them design a campaign to encourage more eco-friendly practices in your language school. These kinds of projects allow students to explore environmental subjects in depth, as well as practise researching, writing, and presenting in English.

By thoughtfully including eco-consciousness into English language classes, your school can equip the next generation of global citizens with the knowledge, vocabulary, and mindsets to address our world’s environmental challenges. So why not look for creative ways to start integrating these critical themes into your lessons and activities today?
